The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is pleased to consider applications for its Summer 2019 Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Internship. ABA ROLI serves as the international development wing of the American Bar Association and seeks to promote justice, economic opportunity, and human dignity through the rule of law. Dates and daily schedules may be flexible in response to departmental needs. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.

Terms of the Program:

Interns for ABA ROLI will work with staff of the Research, Evaluation, and Learning division to gain an understanding of international development programs and international rule of law issues. Although this is an unpaid position, interns at ABA ROLI are eligible for a wide variety of perks and learning opportunities including:

  • Transportation reimbursement up to $15.00/day
  • Field trips to D.C. legal destinations such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Supreme Court and Library of Congress
  • Brown-bag lunches with ABA ROLI staff and guest speakers
  • Opportunities to present research and to write articles for newsletters and blogs

Internship Summary

ABA ROLI’s Research, Evaluation, and Learning (REL) team seeks an intern who will work with program staff of the REL division to gain an understanding of international development programs and international rule of law issues within monitoring and evaluation.

The intern will conduct research and preliminary analysis related to a wide variety of rule of law and development issues, including gender based violence, women’s empowerment, trafficking in persons, access to justice, and justice sector reform.

This intern will be reviewing and giving feedback on proposals, working on global indicator reporting, conducting DevResults requests, and conducting basic analysis for final reports as well as evaluation and indexing.

Qualifcations:

  • current graduate/law students or recent graduates from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to social sciences, law, economics, and international relations. A bachelor’s degree is preferred but outstanding undergraduate students may be considered
  • prior policy and/or legal research and analysis experience
  • demonstrated basic knowledge of M&E
  • prior experience in justice sector work and/or international development

ABA ROLI has nearly 400 professional staff work­ing abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organi­zations, including human rights groups.
