ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organi­zations, including human rights groups.

JOB SUMMARY

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative seeks a long-term criminal justice expert with specific experience in restorative justice efforts. This individual will be expected to collaborate with justice sector actors and other partners in Bahrain and help design and develop restorative justice mechanisms or initiatives for Bahrain within the context of ongoing criminal justice reforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide expert support with design and implementation of restorative justice initiatives and provide guidance on how to undertake policy reforms necessary to support implementation and how to best fit these initiatives within the context of ongoing reforms contemplating the use of alternative procedures and the implementation of sentencing reform in criminal cases;

  • Organize training and other educational programs for justice sector staff, judges, prosecutors and others necessary to support implementation of the pilot;

  • Support design and implementation of public education sessions necessary to support the initiative;

  • Collaborate with the justice sector actors to evaluate and assess the results of the initiative and develop a strategy for scaling and/or expanding its restorative justice efforts based on the results;

  • Prepare technical reports to the Country Director and relevant donor(s); and

  • Other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • JD or foreign equivalent and ten or more years of experience related to restorative justice in criminal cases;

  • Experience managing and implementing US Government donor-funded international development programs;

  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines;

  • Ability to act independently to identify and analyze problems and recommend effective solutions;

  • Working knowledge of MENA region is highly desirable

  • Fluency in English (knowledge of Arabic is a plus); and

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
