ABA ROLI is a non-profit program that implements legal reform programs in roughly 50 countries around the world. ABA ROLI has nearly 500 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations, including human rights groups.
JOB SUMMARY
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative seeks a Legal Education Specialist to work directly with Palestinian law schools, administrators, professors and students to increase the quality of Palestinian law graduates’ legal advocacy skills. This is a pro bono position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide individual mentoring and guidance to law professors to increase their capacity to help students use and develop research and oral advocacy skills.
- Implement trainings for law professors on interactive teaching methods such as how to develop, oversee and evaluate moot court exercises.
- Implement training for law students including practical exercises to develop their legal skills.
- Coordinate support from project partners including Palestinian justice sector stakeholders, Palestinian legal professionals, private law firms, and the NGO community to enhance the professor and student training.
- Work with ABA ROLI’s program team to support the Philip C. Jessup moot court national competition in the West Bank and assist with identifying partnerships and linkages to establish a “Jessup culture” in the West Bank.
- Monitor and assist local partners and other actors and ensure that activities are on track, including developing solutions in tandem with headquarters in Washington, DC, when necessary.
- Ensure monitoring and reporting systems are in place, including gathering baseline data, and track program implementation progress against indicators.
- Conduct financial oversight in coordination with Deputy Director, Field Financial Manager and DC staff.
- Prepare technical reports to the Regional Director and relevant donor(s); and
- Other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Law degree and experience related to training on legal advocacy skills;
- Experience managing and implementing US Government donor-funded international direct assistance and response programs;
- Experience training teams to participate in moot court activities, including the Jessup;
- Experience working in the West Bank;
- Fluency in English (knowledge of Arabic is a plus); and
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
