ABA ROLI is seeking local or international consultants (paid or pro bono) to serve as legal and/or judicial experts for programs in the Maldives. Consultants should have expertise in one or more of the following topics:
· Access to justice
· Admission to the legal profession/Bar Examinations
· Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and mediation, including administration of court-annexed ADR programs
· Anti-corruption investigations, including management of investigative bodies
· Bar association development
· Civic education and legal awareness raising
· Continuing legal education
· Court administration and management
· Court personnel education and training
· Judicial education and training
· Judicial ethics
· Judicial reform
· Judicial transparency and accountability
· Legal aid and pro bono legal services – civil and/or criminal
· Legal profession ethics and discipline
· Legislative drafting
· Maldivian legal system (open to Maldivian lawyers only)
· Trial monitoring
The positions may be remote, Maldives-based, or a combination of both. Positions based in the Maldives will vary from short trips (approximately one week) to long-term stays of up to six months. Pro bono experts are preferred for long-term stays. Both pro bono and paid experts who travel will receive accommodations, a flat daily rate to cover meals and incidental expenses, and other benefits.
For consultants not currently based in the Maldives, travel will be permitted only when public health authorities advise that travel is safe.
Multiple positions will available and will be filled on a rolling basis. Applicants’ resumes will be kept on file for future opportunities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with Maldivian counterparts and ABA ROLI, the consultants’ roles may include the following:**
· Conducting research and writing memoranda advising Maldivian institutions on relevant standards or good practices
· Leading trainings, workshops, or meetings with Maldivian counterparts
· Drafting guides, manuals, or other materials
· Developing institutional systems, processes, or procedures
· Working embedded within a Maldivian institution or agency
· Other responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
· University degree in a relevant field; graduate degree preferred
· Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience
· Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours
· Highly organized, with ability to multi-task and remain calm under time pressure
· Prior experience working in a multi-cultural environment
· Demonstrated ability to work effectively individually and as a team
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
· Ability to use discretion when working with confidential documents and information
· Interest in and commitment to the rule of law
