ABA ROLI is a non-profit program that implements legal reform programs in over 60 countries around the world. ABA ROLI has an annual budget of over $40 million andnearly 700 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations.

JOB SUMMARY: Research and Assessments Intern

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is seeking part-time unpaid legal intern(s) for its Research and Assessments Office based in Washington, D.C. for the spring 2016. The intern(s) will work to support a variety of short- and long-term research projects related to rule of law reform in ABA ROLI's thematic areas, i.e., access to justice and human rights, anti-corruption and public integrity, criminal law reform and anti-human trafficking, judicial reform, legal education reform and civic education, legal profession reform, and women’s rights.

Interns for ABA ROLI will work with program staff of their assigned division to gain an understanding of international development programs and international rule of law issues.

Although this is an unpaid position, interns at ABA ROLI are eligible for a wide variety of perks and learning opportunities including:

  • Transportation reimbursement up to $12.00/day
  • Field trips to D.C. legal destinations such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Supreme Court, and Library of Congress
  • Brown-bag lunches with ABA ROLI staff and guest speakers

****RESPONSIBILITIES****

The intern will support the development of related research projects such as:

  • Status of women assessment and a commercial law assessment in Libya;
  • Development of a fellowship and training program for foreign legal professionals;
  • Investigation of global supply chains and human trafficking risks in Sub-Saharan Africa.

****QUALIFICATIONS****

  • Current law student or recent JD/LLM graduates;
  • Excellent research, writing and analytical skills;
  • Strong commitment to public interest law and/or human rights, as evidenced by relevant experience and coursework;
  • Proficiency with MS Office;
  • International development experience highly desirable but not required; knowledge of foreign languages a plus;
  • Legal research interns should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable.
