ABA ROLI - Short-Term Consultant

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) seeks a Copy Editor Consultant to support its Women and Girls Empowered (WAGE) global consortium program. WAGE will be publishing various documents including tools on its website. Some of these publications include case studies, white papers, policy briefs, baseline assessments, gender and inclusion analyses, and evaluations. WAGE also produces learning tools and other key resources to help document lessons learned and generate recommendations that can be used to develop tailored technical interventions.

Scope of Work

The consultant will be required to:

● Edit and proofread project deliverables to ensure they are clear, concise, uniform, and error-free.

● Review and correct any spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation errors without diluting technical content.

● Ensure accuracy and consistency in terms of language and format.

● Review and edit deliverables for use of consistent gender and culturally sensitive language.

● Cite all references and sources consistently and accurately. Ensure existing references and citations are accurate and applicable.

● Double check page numbers and table of contents.

● Present complex data through understandable and accessible visualizations. Ensure data consistency (between narrative sections and charts/graphics) and “fact-check” figures as necessary.

● Follow up with original authors to clarify any issues.

● Collaborate with ABA ROLI outreach teams and/or with a professional printing company on the design and layout of all materials prior to publication.

● Translate documents as needed (if consultant has additional language skills beyond English).

● Maintain confidentiality in accordance with ABA and donor policies.

Contract Duration: One Year

Start Date: Immediately

Location: Remote/Home-Based

Qualifications:

● Significant experience editing publications (5-8 years).

● Excellent spoken and written English; knowledge of Spanish or other language is a plus.

● Strong communication and analytical skills.

● Experience drafting and editing documents for a wide range of audiences.

● Demonstrated ability to interpret complex data and translate into accessible graphic visualizations.

● Sensitive to version control and other best practices in knowledge management.

● Ability to work tight deadlines while ensuring high-quality work.

● Ability to liaise with various authors and stakeholders.

● Ability to work within a multicultural team in a collaborative manner, while simultaneously being able to self-manage and succeed under pressure.

● Experience working on gender equality, GBV, and/or women’s and girls’ economic empowerment a plus.
