The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA-ROLI) seeks an intern to support the Legal Reform Fund’s (LRF) work in Mexico, Guatemala, Timor-Leste, and Indonesia. LRF is a global three-year project supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues (S/GWI) to address barriers to women’s full and effective participation in economic life in five key areas. These include access to institutions; removing employment barriers; property acquisition, ownership, and management; building credit; and ability to travel.
Among other activities, the intern will conduct targeted research on issues related to women’s economic empowerment, law, and gender-based violence; monitor and provide weekly updates on political and social developments in the countries in which LRF works; and contribute to external communication with stakeholders through an end of year write-up of activities conducted during 2021.
Duration: The usual minimum expected period for an internship with the Legal Reform Fund Program is a minimum of 3 months for 20 hours a week, but there may be some flexibility. The spring internship term is from January 2022 - April 2022. Starting and end dates are flexible.
This internship is unpaid, but LRF is supportive of interns meeting their requirements for academic credits or graduation.
Main Responsibilities include:
- Conduct targeted research on ABA-ROLI LRF’s core thematic areas including women’s economic empowerment and rule of law. We are open to self-directed research projects if you have ideas for research related to our program countries and five key areas.
- Assist the ABA-ROLI LRF team with drafting and reviewing external communications such as an end-of-year report for our pro bono partner firms and stakeholders.
- Assist the ABA ROLI LRF team with coordinating interviews and meetings with stakeholders in Mexico, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.
- Research and monitor major political and social developments in the countries in which LRF works, presenting findings to the team on a weekly basis.
Ideal Intern Profile
- Interest and/or background in rule of law, women’s economic empowerment, international development, civil society and government engagement, or other relevant subjects.
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s, or juris doctorate degree from an accredited college or university or a recent graduate.
- Eligible to work and based in the United States for the duration of the internship.
- Previous research experience.
- Applicants must posses strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Previous experience working with social media and communications.
- Previous experience working for an international or domestic NGO/non-profit
- Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesian, or Tetum is a plus but not required.
