The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (“ABA ROLI”) seeks a Program Officer - Mexico, to manage a new two-year rule of law program there. This will be a full-time position based in Mexico City, with potential regular travel throughout the country.
The Program Officer will manage technical assistance activities related to ABA ROLI’s new Project for Participation, Transparency, and Open Information (Proyecto para Participación, Transparencia, e Información Abierta, or “PATRIA”) in its support for effective collaboration between the Mexican justice sector and civil society to improve accountability and citizen engagement. Activities will include coordinating visits by the public to courthouses and offices of Attorneys General, coordinating youth-police soccer leagues, training civil society on “freedom of information” issues, and developing a tracking system for freedom of information requests.
The Program Officer will support the Program Director in conducting the following activities:
- Develop and implement long- and short-term strategies, work plans, and activities.
- Manage international and local staff.
- Support technical activities, including training.
- Provide technical advice and support regarding program goals and activities.
- Manage sub-grants with local civil society organizations.
- Conduct financial oversight.
- Provide administrative, logistical and financial support related to the program.
- Prepare reports for ABA ROLI and donors.
- Provide business development support and outreach.
Required:
- A degree in law or other related field.
- Professional fluency in Spanish.
- Strong managerial skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong commitment to rule of law principles.
Preferred:
- Experience with U.S. government-funded international programs.
- Experience in conducting training on criminal justice issues.
- Experience working in Latin America, particularly Mexico.
- Professional fluency in English.
- Experience with criminal justice issues, and government transparency and accountability issues.
